In September, Legacies & Lunch will feature noted Little Rock author Bill Jones discussing his new book, Petit Jean: a Wilderness Adventure, which is a novella for young readers. The legend of Petit Jean, in which a young French woman stows away as a cabin boy on a trans-Atlantic voyage, has been told in many versions since at least the mid-nineteenth century. Notable among a broader cycle of folk tales and ballads memorializing women disguised as men, the story depicts a spunky, strong willed young woman determined to stay by the side of her fiancé, only revealing her true identity after she proves herself his equal on the arduous journey. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and Jones will sign copies after his talk.

Legacies & Lunch is free, open to the public, and supported in part by the Arkansas Humanities Council. Programs are held from noon-1 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. Attendees are invited to bring a sack lunch; drinks and dessert are provided. For more information, contact 918-3033.
