The Author, George M. Cate

Arkansas native George M. Cate was born in 1934 to a local newspaper editor in Jonesboro. His father moved the family to Little Rock in 1938 where Cate attended Little Rock High School, now Little Rock Central High, and was a member of the Tiger football team. He earned a BS in banking and finance and an MBA from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Cate taught business and economics courses at Little Rock University, now the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where he was involved in the writing of two textbooks, as well as twenty-two articles analyzing Arkansas government in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. He continued his teaching career at Montgomery College in Maryland until 1965 when he started working for business management firms in Washington DC, whose clients were mainly federal government agencies. He later started the Cate Corporation, consulting government agencies and non-profit organizations on their financial systems.

While in the financial consulting business, he wrote several books on the field. After his retirement in 2005, his interest turned to Arkansas history. His next book, entitled Georgie’s War, describes life for Little Rock children during World War II, and will be published in 2009. He lives in Virginia with his wife.
